Frequently asked questions
A microneedling device uses a series of precisely spaced microneedles to perforate the outer layers of the skin. These tiny injuries naturally stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. This formation of collagen creates healthier and tighter-looking skin and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Patients will notice the results right away. The skin will continue to heal and build collagen for up to six months. Patients will typically receive several treatments to achieve optimal results.
There are two important steps that you should follow when preparing your skin for microneedling. The first is to avoid exposure to the sun for a minimum of 24 hours unless you have applied a strong SPF for protection. Any prolonged exposure, including in tanning beds, may lead to irritation during the treatment. Secondly, it's important to halt the use of some skincare products. This includes acid-based products like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and azelaic acid, along with retinoids. Even though the products are beneficial for the appearance and health of your skin, you should not use them right before or after your microneedling treatment. If you do, you may experience over-drying or skin irritation. On appointment day, be sure to wash your face using a gentle cleanser that morning, and don’t wear any serums, perfume, or lotion at the time of your appointment. If you usually wear makeup, or have an appointment later in the day, be sure to remove it before arrival.
The skin's recovery from microneedling typically follows a three day pattern. Microneedling is generally well tolerated by most skin types. Minor side effects like dryness, redness, erythema (similar to a sunburn), and/or slight swelling may present after treatment. Additionally, the treated skin will feel dry and tight. Moderate skin flaking is normal in the first few days.
Day 1: Erythema and redness (comparable to a sunburn) and some minor swelling. Minor pinpoint bleeding at the treatment site is not uncommon in the hours after a microneedling treatment. This often depends on the depth settings for the needle cartridges used in the treatment.
Day 2: Any erythema and swelling present will begin to subside.
Day 3: Erythema and swelling subsides fully and the skin takes on a healthy pinkish color.
Microneedling side effects may last for up to three days, depending on the depth of the penetration of the needles. By the third day following a microneedling procedure, any swelling or redness will begin to subside and the skin will take on a healthy pinkish color. In general, the treated areas recover rapidly from microneedling.
New collagen is produced for the next 6 to 8 months after treatment. Keep the treatment area clean without using harsh or irritating substances. You may use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser with mild enzymes in the morning and night. Try not to scrub too hard; gentle exfoliation is all that is needed. In addition, limit further damage to your skin from solar radiation. Although many sunscreens block UV-A radiation, look for a high-quality sunscreen that also blocks UV-B radiation. Blocking both forms of solar radiation will better prevent further cellular damage and help to preserve your results.
